It takes CONSTANT work. I'm always updating things, moving topics, pointing people where they should be going. Adding new features. Finding staff members....

If you do all this work and no one signs up, it's kinda pointless. I barely have any users yet! The old CPE had over 1000! Unless you can get people to sign up, it's pointless.

Also for a newbie, Forumotion would be VERY difficult.

OK if you don't know what Forumotion is you shouldn't be creating a forum. NO.

Way back in the day I had a forum with 2500 active (not just registered) users. In fact, today is the one year anniversary of me closing it. It grew to that size due to a series of complicated mergers and behind the table talks with several admins of smaller forums. Back then, though, pretty much the only competition was MC and the HQ (which closed and sent all of their members in out direction for about a year).

Running a forum of that size will just about blow your brains out. Some of the staff members I hired were, hmm... how to put this... not good. And there was a brief period (when I was away) that it had 20 administrators. So you have to be careful picking staff. We were fairly lax in the rules department, but you still had to deal with the one wacko who posts porn every week. And if you can't use the admin panel in your sleep, don't even bother taking on a forum of that size. I'd had enough of it, so I closed it and migrated all the users to the HQ.
